The Facts: Following up on a previous item. ... Hall of Famer Troy Aikman told SI.com that he believes either Cleveland quarterback Johnny Manziel or Griffin will be Tony Romo's backup in 2016. Baylor coach Art Briles, who coached Griffin in college, said Thursday he could see the former Heisman Trophy winner fitting in with the Cowboys. "You could have a dream. That would probably be making it come true," Briles said from Senior Bowl practices. "That would be a great place for him. It's a great organization; being back in Texas and with the Cowboys and having a chance to get in there under Romo for three years. Not that they need to sell tickets, but it wouldn't hurt ticket sales."
Diehards Line:
The Cowboys need a backup after quarterbacks Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore combined to go 1-11 in 2015 while starting in place of Romo. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has raved about Manziel and Griffin at different points in their career. He wanted to draft Manziel in the first round in 2014 but went with offensive guard Zack Martin after some convincing in the draft room. ESPN.com's Todd Archer believes Dallas would be the worst place for Manziel to play because of all of the trappings in the city for the Aggie legend. Plus, he’s not shown he’s worth the trouble with his play on the field. Of the two, Archer believes Griffin is more likely to be a Cowboy, but he doesn't see that happening either. There are those in the organization who don’t know if he fits the scheme or if his body will allow him to be as effective as he was as a rookie. But if we want to throw out a veteran free agent name, Archer thinks Colt McCoy might be a name to watch.
