The Facts: Bortles threw for franchise records in passing yards (4,428) and touchdowns (35), but that mostly came from his natural play-making ability. As Bortles enters his third season as a starter, he's hoping to be comfortable enough in offensive coordinator Greg Olson's scheme to start dictating to opposing defenses. That means beating them with his brain and his athleticism. "This year, we were kind of worried about our offense, learning and having an understanding of what we're supposed to as an individual be doing," Bortles said. "The longer you're in and the better understanding you have of it, the more that allows you to understand what's going on the defensive side of the ball and how to attack them."
Diehards Line:
He added: "When you know it like the back of your hand, then you can worry about the defense and try and get the offense in the right play." The Jaguars played three quarterbacks that excel in that fashion: New England's Tom Brady, New Orleans' Drew Brees and San Diego's Philip Rivers. All have over a decade of experience as starters in the league, but Bortles is hopeful to continue to climb toward that level. Go ahead and assume that will be a lengthy process.
