The Facts: Thomas got a big new contract on Wednesday and he’s set a big new goal to go with it. Thomas said that one of his goals for the 2015 season is to break Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving yard record. Johnson had 1,964 yards for the Lions in 2012 and Thomas said that he doesn’t think the switch in offensive schemes that happened after Gary Kubiak became the team’s head coach will stand in his way. “There’s a lot of big plays,” Thomas said, via Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
Diehards Line:
As PFT's Josh Alper notes, Thomas set a personal best with 1,619 yards on 111 catches last season, which ranks him 15th on the list of most productive seasons in NFL history. There’s been a lot of talk this offseason about the Broncos being more physical and running the ball more often, but Andre Johnson did have several big seasons while playing for Kubiak in Houston so Thomas can put up big numbers with defenses paying more attention to the ground game. Alper went on to suggest that Peyton Manning will have to avoid the second-half fade that we saw last season if Thomas is going to replace Johnson at the top of the leaderboard.
