The Facts: Johnson made his first free-agency visit since San Francisco released him a day earlier. San Diego has a need at the position and been working this week to address it. While Johnson left town unsigned, the visit was considered positive, and he plans to make a decision no later than Monday, a source said.
Diehards Line:Whether he returns remains to be seen. The Chargers aren't the only ones in play; such teams as New England are reported to have interest and Johnson. But in San Diego, QB Philip Rivers needs more weapons in the receiving corps. He needed them before wide receiver Eddie Royal signed with the Bears this week, and he needs them now. The Chargers return three receivers who surpassed 775 yards last year. Two, tight end Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd, are entering the final year of their contracts. Gates will turn 35 in June, Floyd 34 in September. The third is wideout Keenan Allen. ... We'll be watching for more.
