The Facts: "Backup quarterback" may be more of a value judgment than a job title, and Cassel's an illustration of that. The Bills trade acquisition said at his introductory press conference that he "expects there will be a competition" with EJ Manuel for the starting job, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Diehards Line:
Cassel had settled back into what may be his perfect role in Minnesota (as a bridge for Teddy Bridgewater), but upon being traded to the Bills, he's again thrust into a spot where he might be the best option. As PFT's Darin Gantt put it, "Newly flush with offensive weapons, and with a defense that's already good, the Bills need a baseline of competent play from their quarterback. Obviously there's some concern as to whether Manuel can provide that, so the security of a veteran like Cassel is tempting. ..." True enough. Cassel will never be a true "franchise quarterback," but with more touchdowns than interceptions (96-70) and career passer rating over 80.0, he's shown more than Manuel to date.
