The Facts: Following up on the ongoing story. ... The Packers have exclusive negotiating rights with Cobb until 3 p.m. Saturday, and exclusive signing rights until 3 p.m. Tuesday. Barring the unexpected, and keeping in mind that the unexpected often occurs in NFL contract talks, it appears as if Cobb will be playing elsewhere next season.
Diehards Line:
This according to Journal-Sentinel staffer Bob McGinn, who notes the Packers have been trying to strike a deal with Cobb for almost six months. Nothing has gone their way. According to McGinn, agent Jimmy Sexton has been told by the Packers they'll sign Cobb to a five-year contract averaging in the $8 million to $9 million range. Sexton basically has told the team he's confident more lucrative offers await come Saturday. Indeed, Jacksonville is expected to be all over Cobb. The Jaguars are $69.3 million beneath the top-51 salary cap, giving them the most room of any team. Oakland, with the second-most top-51 cap space at $56.6 million, also is ready to enter the Cobb sweepstake. Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie helped draft Cobb for Green Bay in the second round four years ago and wants to reunite him with steady James Jones. Kansas City is over the cap, but another ex-Packers personnel director, GM John Dorsey, is prepared to create space and might attempt to make a run at Cobb as well. If Cobb departs, the Packers know well that they'll be compensated with a selection late in the third round of the 2016 draft. With Jordy Nelson locked up over the long-term and Davante Adams waiting for a bigger role, Cobb's future in Green Bay is far from certain. ... Stay tuned.
