The Facts: The offseason is in full swing and Smith is still trying to fully recover from his spleen injury. At the moment he feels pretty confident everything will finish on time. “It’s doing well, going great,” Smith said. “I should be fully healed and should be moving forward full go.”
Diehards Line:
And what kind of effect might this have on off-season training? “It shouldn’t affect any of that, it was really just the contact that was holding me up, so with OTAs I should be fine,” Smith said. Indeed, one of the pressing questions facing the organization is whether or not Smith is willing to restructure his contract to give the Chiefs an easier cap hit. Before last season, Smith signed a four-year extension through 2018 that is worth $45 million guaranteed. Smith is clear he’s a team player although the topic, according to the quarterback, has not yet been brought up to him by management. “I’m obviously willing to do anything to help the team and help us get better — whatever that is," he said. One thing he knows for sure? His receiving corps will be different next year. There already have been some changes with the departure of AJ Jenkins and Donnie Avery. Dwayne Bowe's ongoing presence isn't all that certain either. “Obviously free agency and the draft are the big things to happen but we’ve got all of our offseason: Phase one, phase two, the OTAs, and the minicamp,” Smith said. “It’ll be a chance to see all those new guys in and really rehash everything from this year and look to get better.”
