The Facts: Reserve QBs Tolzien and Matt Flynn are slated to hit unrestricted free agency in March, which raises the possibility one or both might not be back next season. On Thursday, HC Mike McCarthy was asked about the prospect of drafting a passer with Tolzien and Flynn having a chance to test the market. "I don't think you ever pass on a quarterback," McCarthy said at the NFL Scouting Combine. "It's the most important position in the game. If you have one at a value that you're comfortable and he's in a position to pick him, I think you pick him."
Diehards Line:
McCarthy also praised Flynn and Tolzien for their work in Green Bay behind starter Aaron Rodgers. Moreover, the Packers' head coach indicated the 27-year-old Tolzien had some upside to improve further. "Really Scott and Matt, it's really two different questions. Scott and Matt obviously fit in our room and do a very good job of what they're asked for," McCarthy said. "I think Scott is definitely an ascending player. I still think he has more growth in front of him." As PFT suggests, it will be interesting to see if there's a market for Tolzien, who started a pair of games for the injured Rodgers in 2013. Though he flashed some potential in his brief time in the lineup, he was error-prone, throwing five picks in three appearances, and he lost the job to Flynn. This season, Tolzien was sharp in exhibition play, connecting on more than two-thirds of his throws. However, Flynn, not Tolzien, was the top backup to Rodgers in the regular season.
