The Facts: The Johnson the Jets signed a year ago wasn’t up to his old standards, so they decided not to keep him around for another year. The team announced they weren’t picking up the option on the veteran running back’s contract, meaning he’ll be an unrestricted free agent on March 10.
Diehards Line:
Johnson, best known for topping the 2,000-yard rushing barrier with the Titans in 2009 managed just 663 yards and one rushing touchdown on a career-low 155 carries last year. He had just one 100-yard game as well. As NFL.com's Kevin Patra suggests, his production has fallen precipitously as he no longer possesses the tackle-breaking skills to be a workhorse 1,000-yard back. Patra added, if the Jets have any designs on reuniting offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and running back C.J. Spiller, breaking up with CJ2K is the first move. ... Whatever the case, the Jets save $3.5 million by cutting Johnson.
