The Facts: Following up on the ongoing story. ... While he said Thursday the Jets’ starting QB job belongs to Geno Smith, Vick also made it clear he thinks he can lead Jets to a Super Bowl if given the chance. “I just feel like I can help any football team, any organization, particularly this football team, get to a Super Bowl,” Vick told the Daily News on Thursday. “It’s tough at this stage of my career because I still feel like I’m a fairly young player and I can still keep up. People make it seem like I’m getting older and things are not the same. I beg to differ.”
Diehards Line:
Vick will be 34 on June 26, gets hurt too much and fumbles too much, but as Daily News columnist Gary Myers argued, at this point he’s significantly better than Smith, who improved the last month of his rookie season when he started using his legs, but otherwise really didn’t inspire much confidence he is the future. Vick wants to mentor Smith, but he desperately wants to play. The organization is rooting for Smith to assert himself and hold off Vick and give the Jets hope he will be their guy, but the mistake they made with Mark Sanchez was enabling him and never making him earn the job. If Vick clearly outplays Smith in practice and in the preseason games, Rex Ryan will lose his credibility in the locker room if he sticks with Smith. And what are the odds of Vick outplaying Smith? As Myers put it: "If Vick can beat out [Nick] Foles, he can beat out Smith — if Ryan gives him the chance. ..." Stay tuned.
