The Facts: Following up on a previous item. ... Crabtree said today he has been in the Bay Area for two months, mostly working out on his own. (He said he has thrown with some college QBs; Josh Morgan also has worked out with him). When asked if he thought throwing with the 49ers QB was beneficial toward improving chemistry, he asked, "Who's the quarterback?" When Bee staffer Matt Barrows responded, Alex Smith, Crabtree said, "He's the QB? I'm just asking."
Diehards Line:Smith is not under contract, but he is all but certain to be re-signed -- and serve as the team's starter -- once the lockout ends. And while nearly every other receiver on the roster -- Morgan, Ted Ginn, Kevin Jurovich, Kyle Williams, even rookie Ronald Johnson -- has found a way to throw with Smith this offseason, Crabtree has not. ... Later Crabtree said, "Whoever the QB is I'm gonna do my job. I'm going to do the best I can to get whatever he needs. You know what I'm saying? That's just how it's going to be. I'm not one-sided. I'm for whoever's the QB. It's just how I've been. Everybody knows that. ..." Asked if he didn't agree it appears Smith will be that guy this season, Crabtree replied: "I wish I could tell you that. ..." Fantasy Football owners hoping this is the season the ultra-talented Crabtree adds what's been the missing ingredient in his game -- maturity -- might want to lower their expectations a bit.
