The Facts: The second-round addition of Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick did not do anything to change the 49ers' intention of re-signing Smith. In fact, the 49ers' decision to trade up to select Kaepernick might have improved the odds of Smith returning to the team for a seventh season.
Diehards Line:As CSN's Matt Maiocco notes, Kaepernick is expected to be the 49ers' QB of the future, which means the team would not likely make a huge investment in attracting a quarterback, such as Philadelphia backup Kevin Kolb, to the organization in a trade. "The plan for Alex is unchanged," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday night. "With Alex, we are rowing and we're not going to miss a beat. Nothing has changed. ..." Worth noting: Smith was one of approximately 15 players to take advantage of the lifted lockout rules and stop by the 49ers' practice facility. He met with Harbaugh during the day. But the lockout rules have since gone back into effect, at least temporarily closing the doors to players to visit with coaches. Kaepernick now becomes the second QB under contract to the 49ers, joining veteran David Carr.
