Chargers Make Antonio Gates The NFL's Highest Paid TE (7/28 5:18 PT)

The Facts: Gates has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the San Diego Chargers. The deal, which runs through the 2015 season, is worth $7.235 million per season, with $20.4 million in guarantees, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.  Reported by ESPN.com

Diehards Line: The extension makes Gates the NFL's highest paid tight end. Although he's been slowed at times by various ailments, Gates posted a career-best 1,157 yards last season. With 57 touchdowns over the past six seasons, it's not hard to justify the Chargers' willingness to invest as heavily as they have.
