Rodgers Practicing, Won't Play; Wilson Held Out Wednesday
Following up on this week's Team Notes. ... Aaron Rodgers made it clear on Tuesday that he is not healthy enough to play at this point in his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon, but that is not going to keep the Jets from activating him from injured reserve.
Head coach Robert Saleh shared the team's plans during a Wednesday press conference. Saleh was clear that Rodgers is "not playing," but will come off injured reserve because that will allow him to continue practicing with the team over the final weeks of the season.
"We're still gonna keep him on the active," Saleh said. "We've got the roster flexibility with all the different things that have happened over the course of the last couple of weeks. It's all part of his rehab and just having him out on the football field is a plus for everybody. It's a plus for him, it's a plus for his teammates so we're gonna keep him on the 53."
Rodgers also said on Tuesday that he plans to play for the Jets beyond the 2024 season, so the next few weeks will be a way to start the process of building what all involved hope will be a better second year with the team. ...
Meanwhile, after suffering a concussion in the shutout loss to the Dolphins, quarterback Zach Wilson "seems unlikely" to play against the Commanders in Week 16, according to Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic.
Wilson is currently in the NFL concussion protocol.
With the Jets' disastrous season over, look for Trevor Siemian to get the start against Washington.
Rosenblatt doesn't like Siemian's chances of getting through an entire game, with his off-target percentage (28.2 percent) being the worst of 56 quarterbacks with at least 35 pass attempts this season.
New York's catastrophic QB situation makes the Washington defense an interesting fantasy option in Week 16, if managers can stomach such a play. ...
Also of interest. ... Israel Abanikanda (ankle) was listed as limited on the Jets' estimated practice report Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Abanikanda totaled a season-high six touches in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, but he also appears to have come out of the game with an ankle injury. As CBSSports.com suggests, with the Jets out of playoff contention, the rookie running back could see extra work during the final three weeks of the season, as long as he can prove healthy enough to suit up.
He'll work to ramp up his activity level in practice Thursday in anticipation of playing Week 16 against the Commanders.
