David Garrard Looking For Romo-Like Deal
(3/23 8:38 PT)

The Facts:
Garrard told Times-Union columnist Gene Frenette a few days after the Jags' AFC playoff loss to the Patriots that he expects the six-year, $67.5 million contract ($31 million guaranteed) given Cowboys QB Tony Romo last October would be the logical reference point for his own negotiations. This week, Garrard's agent, Albert Irby, emphasized the same thing in a phone interview. "We're not insisting that [Garrard] gets more than Romo, but it's got to be in that ballpark," Irby said. "We're not going all the way back to [Houston Texans quarterback] Matt Schaub." Reported by the Florida Times-Union

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Schaub, after being traded to Houston from the Falcons, received a six-year, $48 million contract, including a $7 million guarantee despite starting just two games. ... Garrard and the Jaguars have no immediate deadline pressure to reach agreement on the richest contract in team history. As Frenette points out, contracts in the $60-70 million range are never done quickly. That's especially true with the Jags, a small-market franchise with limited revenues. Frenette believes the two sides will finalize a long-term contract soon enough because neither wants the issue unresolved as the team's Super Bowl window is opening up.
