The Lions’ Web site posted a story about Smith and his views on the drafting of Jahvid Best. “I think he’s a good complement because he’s able to make it to this level and because of what he was able to do in college,” Smith said. A good complement? Someone who can help the team? Let’s hope Smith is just being polite and that he truly understands that he’s in a fight to keep his job and that coaches probably already have him penciled in as No. 2 on the depth chart.

So wrote Free Press reporter Carlos Monarrez, who appears to have a better understanding of Smith's standing with the club than the player himself. As Monarrez explained, Smith played through pain, did what was asked and was a very good pass protector – and the coaches loved him for it. But now that they having a budding star in Best, Smith and his questionable knee might be relegated to the sidelines – or the trading block.
