The Facts:
The volatile Smith punched CB Ken Lucas during a sideline altercation at Friday morning's practice, leaving Lucas' left eye bloodied and swollen. Smith, who was kicked out of practice, was escorted from the practice field by GM Marty Hurney. HC John Fox told the Gazette on Friday afternoon that Smith has been sent back to Charlotte.

Shortly after the fight Smith came over, with Muhsin Muhammad and another coach by his side, and appeared to try and reconcile with Lucas. The two men briefly exchanged a hug. ... The incident brings up reminders of Smith's much-publicized film room attack on WR Anthony Bright in 2002. Smith was suspended one game for that attack. Hurney and coach John Fox said it's unclear at this point if any suspensions will be handed down this time around. "We haven't had much time to talk about it, but it will be dealt with internally," Fox said after practice. ... Stay tuned.
