The Facts:
Following up on a previous item. ... After Friday's incident in which Smith punched teammate Ken Lucas in the face to start a scuffle, the Panthers sent Smith home to Charlotte and weighed disciplinary actions, which could include suspending him for the Sept.7 season opener at San Diego -- and perhaps longer. Under the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, teams can suspend players for up to four games for conduct detrimental to the team.

Nothing is decided yet. Smith's agent, Derrick Fox, said he spoke with his client after the incident and admitted it was a bad move. "He said he made a big mistake," the agent told Rock Hill Herald staffer Darrin Gantt. "Obviously, there needs to be punishment, but we don't know what that will be yet. ..." For the record, this is actually the third such incident since Smith's arrival in Carolina. In 2002, he was involved in a fight with rookie receiver Guilian Gary. Later that year came a more-publicized punching of wideout Anthony Bright during a film session. ... Meanwhile, the Panthers have come down hard on their own players in recent years. Stay tuned. We'll have more when further information is released.
