Report: Union Files Collusion Case
(1/17 9:29 PT)

The Facts:
A league source tells us that the NFL Players Union filed last week its long-expected collusion case. Per the source, the case focuses on the allegation that the teams agreed not to pursue restricted free agents in 2010. The claim also alleges that teams deliberately and collectively delayed option bonus payments due in 2011 until the first day after the first regular-season game. Reported by Profootballtalk.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
According to PFT's Mike Florio, the collusion case constitutes one of the “pressure points” that the union is using in the hopes of persuading the owners to abandon a posture that suggests a lockout aimed at forcing the players to miss a couple of paychecks and then cave to the owners’ demands in the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. The tactic is similar to the pending “lockout insurance” case. In that case, the union is attacking the provision in the league’s broadcast-rights deals calling for ongoing payments in the event of a lockout also was aimed at giving the league a reason to not force a work stoppage. ... Meanwhile, we suggest all fans remember that the public aspect of negotiating is always rather ugly. With the 2011 season on the line, look for plenty of heated rehtoric before we reach that new CBA -- if we do.
