According to his
NFL.com scouting report, Stafford has the size needed to be a franchise NFL QB and the arm strength to go with it. The Lions' long-term need for that franchise player is obvious; the question now is whether Stafford will mount an immediate challenge on incumbent starter Daunte Culpepper's job. ... Also: As previously noted, Stafford already agreed to a six-year contract that includes $41.7 million in guaranteed money. While the total value could be as high as $78 million, MLive.com's Tom Kowalski suggested a more plausible scenario: If, after four years, Stafford hasn't met expectations he's going to get cut; if he's playing well, the Lions will rip up the final two years of the original deal and sign him to an extension. ... Whatever the case, as Kansas City Star staffer Kent Babb commented, "we're talking a cool $41.7 million, whether he's Joe Montana or Alex Smith."
