The Facts:
Ryan will open the regular season as the Falcons' starting quarterback. The decision was made over the weekend and was announced by HC Mike Smith this afternoon. "We have evaluated Matt through OTAs, mini-camp, training camp and over the course of three preseason games," Smith said. "After reviewing Matt’s progress, we feel like he has won the starting job."

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Ryan will make his regular-season debut Sept. 7 against Detroit at the Georgia Dome. The last rookie quarterback to start the regular season was Houston's David Carr in 2002. Carr went 4-12, getting sacked a whopping 76 times. Ryan won an open competition over veterans Chris Redman, Joey Harrington and D.J. Shockley. ... Given the options and the circumstances, this seems like a wise move. Ryan has been praised by teammates for his leadership, diligence and huddle presence as well as his ability to make plays.
