an ongoing story. ... HC Lovie Smith didn't throw out his well-used line that nobody gets kicked out of the family for one off-the-field indiscretion. Smith said he was "very disappointed" and was seeking more information on the incident that has Benson facing two Class B misdemeanors.
Reported by the Chicago Sun-Times
Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Benson has a May 19 court date to face charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. ... As Chicago Tribune staffer David Haugh suggests, the Bears have been looking for reasons to demote or dismiss Benson, who disputes the charges against him, since last season ended. Now he might have given them one. ... For the record, if the Bears take the drastic step of releasing Benson (assuming they designate him a post-June 1 cut), it would save them about $820,000 of the $3.365 million he counts against the 2008 salary cap -- not that a team with $16.4 million of cap space has to worry about such details. No matter how the Bears respond, a league office cracking down on repeat offenders figures to have interest in an arrest that marks Benson's third brush with the law in the last six years.
