The Facts:
Following up on the
ongoing story. ... The deadline to place the franchise tag on a player is 1 p.m. Monday, but in regards to Jackson, the date to be aware of is March 13. No one among the Chargers' decision makers believes placing the tag on the Pro Bowl WR is a sound decision or that it will happen. The possibility was estimated by multiple sources last week at less than 1 percent.

While GM A.J. Smith could always pull a last-minute reversal, Union-Tribune staffer Kevin Acee reports that would be shocking to anyone with a firm grasp on all the Chargers have to do at other positions as well as the situation with Jackson and the wide receiver market. No matter how badly Norv Turner and Philip Rivers want Jackson back, franchising him appears to be too costly for one player for one year. Because he was also franchised last year, Jackson would be due 120 percent of his '11 salary, meaning it would cost the team $13.7 million, all of which would count against this year's salary cap. Also, it is believed by several people close to Jackson that he so sincerely wants to remain in San Diego, with Rivers and Turner, that he will take less from the Chargers than he might get elsewhere. It would appear the Chargers are willing to let those other offers come in. ... That process is expected to happen quickly -- beginning March 13.
