Irsay Wants To Avoid An Emotional Decision On Peyton Manning
(1/29 7:3 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on the ongoing story. ... Owner Jim Irsay denied a report Saturday night that claimed he has already decided to release Manning sometime in February. After listening to Irsay's conversation with Hannah Storm on ESPN Sunday morning, it's harder to believe Irsay hasn't made up his mind. Irsay spoke about all the great things Manning has done for the Colts and his strong relationship with Manning. But he also expressed clear doubts about Manning's health. Irsay said it was his "responsibility" as an owner to only put a player back on the field if "it's in [the player's] best interests." Reported by Profootballtalk.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
As PFT's Gregg Rosenthal reminded readers, Irsay said back in December that he expects Manning to be with the Colts if he's healthy. This interview indicated Irsay probably doesn't expect Manning to be healthy. According to SI.com's Peter King, Manning is having difficulty getting back to full arm strength five months after neck surgery -- meaning he's certainly not healthy. So do you pay Manning the $28 million he has due on Mar. 8 if he's still not ready to go? "It's your responsibility to not make decisions for sentimental reasons," Irsay said about Manning's option bonus. "This isn't fantasy football." That's a fact. ... For what it's worth, former Colts HC Tony Dungy, appearing on NBC tonight, added that if Manning is healthy enough he will play for the Colts, if not he will retire. ... Our prediction? There will be no shortage of Manning coverage in Indy this week. Prepare yourself for the onslaught.
