According to Jay Glazer who spoke to Steelers' officials, it will take a surprise found in the MRI for Mendenhall not to be done for the 2011 NFL season with a torn ACL.

While that can happen, teams tend to be conservative in their prognostications prior to official information so the odds are not in Mendenhall's favor at this point. We'll try and get a feeling for what his recovery timeline might be for the 2012 season, but the Adrian Peterson timeline suggests it might be a stretch to have him fully ready to go as the season opens next year.
