Following up on a previous item. ... Smith broke his arm while playing defensive back during a flag football game at his football camp this weekend, his agent Derrick Fox confirmed. Smith underwent surgery for the injury Sunday night. Fox predicted that Smith should be ready for the Panthers' regular-season opener. "I'm not trying to play doctor, but I don't think he'll miss any games due to this injury," Fox said.

While Fox has told reporters that Smith was injured while playing with kids at his annual youth football camp, Profootballtalk.com is reporting it actually happened in the championship game of an adult flag football league in which Smith and other NFL players had participated for the entire duration of the league's season. ... Whatever the case, Smith broke the same arm last season, albeit in a different -- but nearby -- spot. A small plate and screws were installed to repair the injury last night. ... Again, Smith is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late July because of the injury but should be available later in the preseason. Stay tuned.
