According to NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, the Raiders have announced the release of Russell.

It's been a precipitous fall for first pick overall in the 2007 draft. The Raiders traded for former Redskins starter Jason Campbell last month perhaps telegraphing this move. The team would have owed Russell $9.4 million in salary had they kept him through the start of the regular season (or if he'd been injured taking part in off-season work). By releasing him, the Raiders save $6 million against this year's cap, all but ensure that Campbell is their 2010 starter and move Russell into the discussion as the biggest bust in NFL Draft history.
