Following up on a previous item. ... Smith no longer is set to have shoulder surgery. The Lions originally planned for Smith to have surgery to tighten one of his shoulders after he got off crutches from surgery to repair a torn knee ligament. Reported by the Detroit Free Press

HC Jim Schwartz was asked Thursday at the NFL scouting combine whether the Lions’ doctors originally wanted Smith to have surgery but Smith sought a second opinion. Smith’s shoulder popped out Sept. 27 against Washington. “He played the rest of the year with the shoulder and didn’t have an issue with it,” Schwartz said. ... Smith later suffered an injury to his other shoulder, then the knee injury the required reconstructive surgery and that is leaves his ability to put in a full season in 2010 in question.
