49ers HC Mike Singletary changed his tune on Smith when speaking to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Thursday.

Singletary, who at the end of the season suggested the team might go after a passer who could compete with Smith for the No. 1 job in the offseason, gave the first overall pick in 2005 a renewed vote of confidence. "I feel very good about saying that Alex Smith is our starter going into next season," Singletary said. ... Time will tell, but Smith's late-season success certainly gives the Niners reason enough for optimism.
