Leon Washington Not Optimistic About New Deal
(7/31 6:19 PT)

The Facts:
For the first time since this contract dispute surfaced in the spring, Washington sounded ticked off. After the afternoon practice, Washington address his decision to report to camp, the state of negotiations. "I don't feel confident that something will get done," he told reporters on the practice field. "It kind of hurts me a little bit because I've been here three years, busting my tail off. I've played hard for the organization and for me not to get rewarded, or for me to be put in some type of situation, I'm not going to back down." Reported by the New York Daily News

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
But as Daily News staffer Rich Cimini asked, what are his options? Is he going to walk out in protest? He'd be subject to a $17,000-a-day fine because he is under contract (for $535,000) this year. So, the Jets have the leverage and GM Mike Tannenbaum is milking all of it. And, in a sense, Washington blinked by showing up. According to Cimini, the two sides are continuing to talk, but they're not close to a deal. Washington is looking for $6 million a year. Tannenbaum is playing serious hardball.
