Patriots Place Franchise Tag On Matt Cassel
(2/5 2:14 PT)

The Facts:
The Patriots announced today that they have utilized their 2009 franchise designation on Cassel. "Matt has been a pleasure to coach his entire career and last season in particular, when his years of hard work and commitment resulted in a most impressive performance," said HC Bill Belichick in a press release. "We look forward to working with Matt again in 2009."  Reported by the Boston Globe

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Cassel is now free to negotiate with other teams -- something he's certain to do. Remember: Cassel is guaranteed the average of the top five salaries at his position in the 2007 season, or a 20 percent salary increase, whichever is greater. This year, that is a reported $14.65 million -- slightly more than Tom Brady’s ($14.6) salary cap charge for 2009. ... Stay tuned. Cassel's status will be an ongoing story until he signs with the Patriots -- or not. The free-agent signing period begins Feb. 27.
