If he returns, Pennington will receive a bump in his '08 salary, from $4.8 million to $6 million. It's based on a clause in his contract that was renegotiated two years ago, when he took a pay cut.

Even though that puts him back to his original '08 salary, Daily News staffer Rich Cimini advised readers his cap number balloons to $9.0 million. ... In case you missed it, HC Eric Mangini told reporters last month the QB competition between Pennington and Kellen Clemens
will be wide open this summer. If Clemens wins that competition, Cimini suggests Pennington's salary would be a ridiculously high for a potential backup.
