The Facts:
The 49ers today picked up a clause in Smith's contract that will keep him a 49er through the 2010 season. Had the team not chosen to exercise the clause in Smith's original six-year, $49.5 million deal he signed in 2005, his contract would have expired after the 2008 season. "We have faith in him," GM Scot McCloughan said today. "It wasn't a tremendous amount of money but it shows we have faith in him that he's the guy."
