Report: Kyle Orton On Verge Of Extension
(2/24 4:45 PT)

The Facts:
Orton is on the verge of signing a one-year contract extension through 2009, an NFL source said Sunday. The deal should be completed in the next few days. It comes on the heels of fellow quarterback Rex Grossman signing a one-year deal worth $3 million and including up to $2 million in incentives. Reported by the Chicago Tribune

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
According to Tribune staffer Vaughn McClure, a one-year contract is the best-case scenario for Orton based on the uncertaintly surrounding the position. If he loses the job to Grossman, then signing a longer term deal would leave him handcuffed as a backup. If he performs well as a starter, being signed beyond next season would keep him from landing a richer deal. McClure is among those who believe if the '08 season started today, Orton would likely be the starter.
