Brees is not planning to come to New Orleans on Monday for the start of the team's offseason conditioning program. Although Owner Tom Benson said Friday that
Brees is due in town next week, the unsigned QB is not planning to attend without a contract, according to a source close to Brees. "It is very upsetting to him not being there Monday," the source said. "He wants to be there for his teammates."

Benson said he spoke to Brees Friday morning and feels like the two sides are "close" to a long-term contract extension. So far, however, Times-Picayune staffer x reports there has been no other indication from league sources that a deal is imminent. Talks have been practically non-existent in recent weeks, as both sides appear willing to let the standoff linger past the start of the offseason workout program. Most likely, both sides will look to the start of OTAs (organized team activities) in mid-May as a more urgent deadline, when players will actually start practicing on the field. Worth noting: Brees could still choose to join the team at any point during the offseason program even without being under contract, as long as he signs a waiver. That's not likely to happen anytime soon, though. Despite his stated desire to be there for his teammates, that won't come at the risk of losing contract leverage.
