The Facts:
Following up on the
ongoing story. ... The Texans have until Monday afternoon to decide if they are going to use the franchise designation on any of their unrestricted or restricted free agents. The most likely candidate is Foster, a third-year restricted free agent. If the Texans don't reach a contract agreement with Foster, 25, he can sign an offer sheet with another team. The Texans would have seven days to match the offer or accept a first-round pick in return.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Free agency begins March 13. The deadline for teams to designate franchise players is 3 p.m. Monday. If the Texans use the franchise tag on Foster, he would receive $7.7 million this year after earning $525,000 last season. The team could continue to negotiate with Foster for a long-term deal. As Chronicle beat writer John McClain explained, if the Texans don't sign Foster to an extension and fail to franchise him, another team with a lot of cap dollars could make him a front-loaded offer almost impossible for the Texans to match with their cap restrictions and surrender the first-round pick. The Texans don't want to lose Foster, so franchising him might be the smartest move.
