Schwartz: Matthew Stafford Will Start When Time Is Right
(4/26 12:39 PT)

The Facts:
After the Lions announced the selection of Stafford at the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, HC Jim Schwartz said Saturday he was keeping an open mind about whether or not the rookie will start this season. "We go into this process the same way," Schwartz said. "Not with, 'Hey, we're going to sit him for a year regardless.' Or, 'Hey, he's going to start right away.' I think we go in and say, 'If he's ready -- in our eyes if he's ready -- and if he's our best quarterback, then he plays.'" Reported by the Detroit Free Press

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Schwartz said the Lions are in a good position of not having to force Stafford to play right away because they have a "rejuvenated" Daunte Culpepper, who has lost about 30 pounds and looked good in mini-camp last week. As reported in last weekend's Fantasy Notebook, Culpepper has impressed teammates with his off-season work. Stafford, meanwhile, is helping to manage expectations. "I'm a competitive guy, and I'm going to get ready as quick as I possibly can," he said. "And if that's Game 1, then that's Game 1. If it's Game 8 or not even in the first year, it's up to the coaches."
