NFL commissioner Roger Goodell did not reinstate Favre to the NFL today because he wants to give the Packers and their retired QB more time to work out a solution to their impasse over Favre's possible return. "The commissioner is taking no action today," league spokesman Greg Aiello said. "When Brett is reinstated by the commissioner, we will announce it."

Once Goodell approves the application, which he's expected to do today, the Packers have 24 hours to reinstate, trade or release Favre. ... In case you haven't been following along, Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy met with Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, at Cook's office in Mississippi this morning, then only with Cook this afternoon. As noted in a previous item, Favre's absence from the latter part of the meeting suggests possible negotiations -- of what type, however, is hard to divine. The fact that Murphy asked for the meeting in an effort to keep Favre from reporting to camp, however, seems clear. ... Stay tuned.
