The Dolphins released Rayner before Wednesday's afternoon practice, leaving rookie free agent Dan Carpenter as Jay Feely's only competition for the special teams roster spot.

The Dolphins initially signed Rayner this summer to push Feely, primarily in the kickoff department, but early practice showings apparently didn't warrant keeping the NFL journeyman through training camp, which starts in late July. Even if Carpenter can nail down a roster spot as a kickoff specialist, Feely still appears to be a lock to continue on as the placement man.
