The Facts:
Fitzgerald continues to say he wants to remain with the Cardinals. "I'm playing for the Cardinals so long as I possibly can," Fitzgerald said. He also said, "We're making progress" in the ongoing talks over a long-term contract and that (GM) "Rod Graves is working extremely hard, (HC) Ken Whisenhunt, everybody is doing their part to make this thing work."

The Cardinals owe Fitzgerald $32 million over the next two years because of incentives the receiver reached. That's why the team wants to negotiate a long-term deal. On Friday, the agent for Alan Faneca blamed Fitzgerald's delay in re-doing his contract for costing the Cardinals a chance to land the offensive lineman. Fitzgerald understands the perception. "In every situation, somebody has got to be the villain. I guess I'm that guy now," he said before adding: But, he said, "In January, next year, when we're deep in the playoffs, this thing won't be an issue." Fitzgerald, asked if he thinks a deal will be finished, said, "I definitely hope so. ..." As
previously noted on this site, a deal will get done; it's just a matter of when.
