But don't write off a veteran like Hester, who remains very much a part of the plan. "Devin's role has not changed," general manager Phil Emery said. Emery added: "I know that [OC Mike] Tice has done a lot of planning. We want to make sure that we have a special plan for Devin; we have the Devin Package, a package of plays as a receiver. You never know where he is going to line up. ..." We're still skeptical of how much a role Hester will play. Four of the 21 additions in free agency and the draft have come at wide receiver, certainly providing upgrades in Brandon Marshall and rookie Alshon Jeffery and depth with Johnny Knox very questionable to play this season. In other words, we'll continue to believe Hester will play a significant role in the passing attack the minute we see more than verbal evidence that's the case.
