Harbaugh: Selection Of LaMichael James Not A Reflection Of Gore
(4/30 3:32 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on a previous item. ... The 49ers' stable of running backs got a little more crowded on Friday with the addition of big-play threat James, a second-round draft pick. James joins Frank Gore, Brandon Jacobs, Kendall Hunter and Anthony Dixon, as well as FB Bruce Miller. "Is this an indictment against Frank Gore? My God, no," HC Jim Harbaugh said Friday evening about the impact James' arrival has on the franchise's all-time leading rusher. "Whatever pick we make on this football team, where this football team is right now, that person is coming in to compete with solid football players, winning football players, 49ers. It's a highly competitive environment." Reported by CSNBayArea.com

Harbaugh also said he can envision the 49ers keeping six running backs on their 53-man roster, including Rock Cartwright, a special-teams ace. ... Gore has not taken part in the first two weeks of the 49ers' offseason program. He typically trains on his own in Miami during the non-mandatory portion of the offseason. "We've been in contact with Frank," Harbaugh said. "Frank will be here when he's here. He's taking care of some business right now." James (5-foot-8, 194 pounds) does not figure to supplant Gore as the 49ers' every-down back any time soon. He appears to fit more in the third-down, change-of-pace mold with a frame similar to Hunter's 5-7, 199 pounds. Indeed, Maiocco believes James is likely to supplant Hunter in that role this summer.
