The New England Patriots have received permission to speak St. Louis' Josh McDaniels about their pending OC opening and will speak with him this weekend, a team source told NFL Network's Albert Breer Friday.

McDaniels, one season into his run as the Rams OC, asked St. Louis for his freedom in the wake of HC Steve Spagnuolo's firing, opening the door to a return with the Patriots, per NFL Network's Michael Lombardi. McDaniels served as a Patriots assistant from 2001 to 2008. New England's current OC, Bill O'Brien, has been tabbed as the new HC at Penn State. Other suitors (including the Chiefs) are expected for McDaniels' services, just 13 months after he was fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos after fielding an 11-17 record.
