Alge Crumpler underwent shoulder surgery in late January for a "significant" injury to the joint.

According to Globe staffer Shalise Manza Young, the surgery was "extensive." Crumpler is currently rehabbing the shoulder but it is unclear when he'll be back at full strength. ... Crumpler, who signed a two-year deal to come to New England in 2010, played much of the season with the injury. While he played a key leadership role with the team, his on-field duties were limited by the emergence of rookies Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, both of whom played much greater roles in the passing attack.
