The Facts:
Contrary -- sort of -- to the report that the Jets will release Jones on Monday, the Jets have issued on Monday a statement indicating that he'll be cut on Friday. Said G.M. Mike Tannenbaum: "We have informed Thomas Jones and his representatives that we will release him on March 5."

Both Tannenbaum and HC Rex Ryan both offered praise for Jones, with Ryan saying: "As I said the other day, this is one of the tough decisions we had to make for our organization. ..." Jones was due to earn a roster bonus of $2.8 million next week, and even in an uncapped year the Jets weren't willing to pay it. Instead, they'll turn the running game over to Shonn Greene and Leon Washington. ... Meanwhile, Jones will become an unrestricted free agent on Friday. It remains to be seen what teams will show interest.
