Smith, who is recovering from knee surgery, also will undergo surgery on his left shoulder. Because Smith still is on crutches, the work on his shoulder won't be done until he's off crutches.

Because of Smith's injury situation, the Lions expect to add a running back to the team in one form or another. GM Martin Mayhew also said that Smith was playing with two injured shoulders for almost the entire season. ... Also per Mayhew: QB Daunte Culpepper could be back in Lions' uniform next season and QB Drew Stanton still is a part of the team's plans moving forward.
