After 41 training camp practices and three exhibition games, the 49ers should have their starting quarterback for 2009. "Hopefully by the third preseason game," coach Mike Singletary said Tuesday in an interview with The Chronicle.

As Chronicle staffer John Crumpacker noted, because the third pre-season game is the most important one of the exhibition schedule, it makes sense that Singletary would want to name a starter for the season at that time, after scrutinizing Shaun Hill and Alex Smith in training camp. Asked specifically about the competition between Hill and Smith, the coach said, "The quarterback will evolve. It will jump out. ..." Hill is the early favorite but Smith is clearly in the mix.
