The Facts:
In his first public comments since GM Jerry Angelo made comments about the QB position two days after the regular-season ended, HC Lovie Smith responded to Angelo's belief that establishing competition for Orton is a top priority. "Well, first off, I don't think Jerry said that our No. 1 priority was that," Smith replied, adding: "We like what Kyle Orton was able to do this past year. ... I think our quarterback position is in the best shape it's been in going into the offseason."

Smith also suggested that Rex Grossman might not remain with the team, which could explain Angelo's focus on bringing in others at the position. Smith also stressed that competition is desired at every position -- including quarterback. As noted in a previous item, Byron Leftwich, David Carr, Jeff Garcia, J.P. Losman and Chris Simms are among the QBs who should be available as free agents this offseason.
