The Facts:
Following up on a previous item. ... McGahee is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee as soon as today in South Florida. Because it generally takes two weeks to a month to recover from a knee scope, Times staffer Aaron Wilson suggests that McGahee could possibly return for the Sept. 7 season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
As Wilson stressed in two different reports tonight, this is regarded as a clean-up medical procedure. ... So, best-case scenario? McGahee is fresh and rested come Week 1 with the knee no longer an issue; rookie Ray Rice gains valuable practice and exhibition snaps through August and the two form a fine complementary duo all season. Worst case? McGahee misses some time early in the season as the knee continues healing and Rice gets off to a fast start in his place. Best bet? Something in between the two extremes. Like maybe a somewhat rusty McGahee works his way into shape and regains his edge over the first month of the season with Rice playing a productive role in tandem with the veteran.
