The Facts:
GM Jerry Reese believes that after a somewhat rocky offseason, the Giants will be a happy and determined group in time for their opener on Sept. 4. But will that group include the unhappy Shockey? "I expect we'll have 53 players when we play the Redskins (on Sept. 4) who want to be here, and are happy to be here, ready to play as a team, ready to defend the title. That's what I expect," Reese said. "If that includes Jeremy, that would be great."

So. ... Shockey's status apparently apparently remains to be seen. Based on Reese's comments, he appeared to leave open the possibility his star tight end won't be part of the Giants at all. According to Daily News staffer Ralph Vacchiano, that statement -- including the key word "if" -- is consistent with the noncommittal way Reese, Tom Coughlin, and the Giants' assistant coaches have discussed Shockey publicly this offseason, saying only that he's their starting tight end "for now." The Giants listened to trade offers for Shockey during the spring but ultimately decided they weren't good enough. Vacchiano added that a trade, though highly unlikely, still apparently hasn't been ruled out. ... Stay tuned.
